Full Container Load (FCL) shipping is a comprehensive logistics method designed for businesses transporting large quantities of goods. When shipping goods using FCL, the entire container and its cargo is allocated exclusively to one shipper, thus providing for secure and efficient transportation.
FCL Shipping Overview
FCL shipping offers flexibility across all freight channels, including sea, road, and rail, each with distinct advantages in terms of transit time, security, and cost. Sea freight is commonly used for international shipping, offering a cost-effective method over long distances.
However, road freight can sometimes be more efficient, especially when dealing with remote locations or avoiding congested ports and shipping routes. Rail transport, on the other hand, provides a balance between cost and speed for land-based shipments.
The choice of channel depends on your specific needs, but regardless of the method, the overall process for FCL shipping remains consistent, with only minor variations.
One of the key benefits of FCL shipping is its cost-effectiveness. The flat rate is based on the size of the container, so the more cargo you load into it, the greater the savings. This makes FCL an attractive option for businesses with bulk shipments. FCL also offers enhanced control over the logistics process, from packing to delivery, ensuring timely and streamlined operations. The cargo remains sealed in the container throughout the journey, reducing handling and minimising the risk of damage. This method provides better protection against damage and theft, but it is not without risks, such as potential loss at sea.
When comparing FCL to Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) shipping via sea, FCL stands out for the fewer restrictions on the types of goods you can transport. LCL shipments, where multiple shippers share container space, typically have longer transit times because of the need to consolidate and deconsolidate the shipped goods. Additionally, if one shipment in an LCL container is held by customs, all shipments in that container are delayed. FCL shipments avoid these delays, offering greater reliability and quicker transit times.
The FCL process begins by determining the appropriate container size to maximise space and reduce costs. It’s essential to consider Incoterms and other logistics factors to ensure a smooth shipping experience.
Step-by-step FCL shipping process
-
Appointing a freight forwarder
Once you appoint us as your freight forwarder, we initiate the process by gathering all necessary information and coordinating the logistics -
Cargo collection and departing at origin
GP Logistics will work closely with your supplier to organise all the logistics processes required to export your goods efficiently. Our team will manage the entire process, from coordinating cargo collection at the supplier’s location, to arranging secure loading and booking freight space for regional or international transit. By partnering with trusted logistics providers, we ensure that your shipment is properly handled and ready for smooth exportation from the country of origin. -
Arrival at destination
Upon arrival in the destination country, the procedures may vary slightly depending on regional regulations. For example, different ports offer varying amounts of free storage time to remove cargo from the port. Some ports may provide as little as a few days of complimentary storage. So it is important to arrange relevant formalities in a timely manner. -
Customs and documentation
We can also manage customs formalities once the goods arrive at the destination port. It is crucial to swiftly and correctly complete and submit all required paperwork, including customs clearance documents, to the relevant authorities. -
Container delivery
After the container has been customs cleared, and we have been advised that the container has been released by the shipping line, we arrange for the container to be collected from the port with final delivery to your specified destination. -
Unloading the container
At your facility, you will break the container seal and unload your shipment. The unbroken seal ensures that the container remained secure throughout the entire shipping process. Depending on your agreement with the carrier, you may have limited time to unload the container. Delays in unloading may result in additional demurrage being incurred. -
Container return
After unloading, it is the responsibility of the receiver to leave the container in a clean condition. If the container is not cleaned properly, or any debris is left over, additional charges from the shipping lines may apply. We will arrange the restitution of the empty container to the designated location, ensuring it is ready for reuse by the shipping line.
Summary benefits of FCL Shipping
Enhanced Security and Privacy
A dedicated container means less handling; this enhances security and reduces the risk of damage during transit.
Faster transit times
FCL sea shipping generally sees fewer delays compared with LCL sea shipments; this means speedier deliveries
Flexibility
Shippers have complete flexibility packing and organising their cargo; this maximises container space and reduces shipping costs.
Streamlined Logistics / Simplified Customs Procedures
With fewer customs issues, FCL shipping offers a more seamless logistics process thus providing for a smoother transit of goods.
Cost-effectiveness
For bulk shipments, FCL offers greater economy of scale, especially when container shipping space can be better optimised.
